The Monte Vista, CO native; Greg Condon, showed how consistent play was the best recipe to win the 2016 New Mexico – West Texas Mid Amateur Championship at Red Hawk Golf Club in Las Cruces, NM. Condon opened the championship with a 73 (+1) and followed it up with a 75 (+3) on the final day to shoot a two day total of 148 (+4) for a two shot victory.
Each day the weather presented a different challenge for all the players in the field. On day one the weather in the morning was perfect with little wind but by the time the field had made the turn to number 10, 20-30 mph wind gusts had arrived and changed the course dramatically. After day one Condon was tied for the lead with Christian Escalante from El Paso, TX and looking at eight other players within 4 shots of the lead.
On day two the winds continued in the morning which had an impact to everyone in the field besides Condon. Seven of the eight players within four shots of the lead all shot higher than their round one scores which paved the way for Condon to take the championship. Wallace Nelson from Meas, AZ put up a good fight and applied the most pressure to Condon by posting a 73 (+1) on day two to shoot a two day total of 150 (+6), for a runner up finish.
With the victory at the New Mexico – West Texas Mid Amateur Championship, Greg Condon will move into 2nd place for the race of SCAGA Player of the Year behind the New Mexico – West Texas Amateur Champion, Sean Carlon.
